 20th CENTURY CHRISTCHURCH

In 1900 the population of Christchurch stood at 4,208. Christchurch was still very small. In 1902 the council began laying sewers and drains in the town. In 1903 an electricity generating station opened but it was several years before electric light completely took over the gaslight.

Trams were in Christchurch from 1904 to 1936. They were replaced by trolley buses. The trolley buses ran on overhead lines like the trams but did not run on rails. The last trolley buses stopped in 1969.

1911 Convent Walk was opened to the public. In the years 1912-1931 the marsh at Quomps was drained and turned into a park for the public. In 1934 slum clearance began around Spicer Street. In 1935 it was decided to built an airfield at Christchurch. Airspeed Limited opened an aircraft factory in 1941. The factory closed in 1962.

By 1951 the population of Christchurch grew to 21,000. A by-pass was built at Christchurch in 1958. In 1967 Stanpit marsh was made a nature park.

1975 Christchurch, England, was twinned with Christchurch, New Zealand.

By the mid 20th century there were many engineering firms in Christchurch. Plessey Limited came to Christchurch in 1978. Airfield industrial estate was built in the around 1980s.

The Red Museum opened in 1952. In 1980 new council offices opened in Bridge Street. In 1983 a new shopping mall opened in Saxon Square. A Tourist Information Office also opened in 1982. Place mill opened to the public in 1983. Furthermore in 1983 the Regent Centre opened. It consisted of theatre and a concert hall. The Regent Cinema was built in 1932. It closed in 1974. The building was a bingo hall until its conversion in 1983. A Museum of Electricity was opened in Christchurch in 1981 by John Wedgwood.
