A Little History of Gisborne
The history of area of the Gisborne and East Coast district by the Maori as first inhabitants is unusal and sets this region apart as the founding place New Zealand.
Tradition
has it that the Nth. Island of New Zealand was fished out of Te
Moana Nui a Kiwa (The Pacific Sea) by the great legendary hero
Maui. The waka (canoe) of Maui from where he hauled this mass of
land is said to rest on the peak of Mount Hikurangi.
Hikurangi presides as it is first in the world to be kissed by
the warm rays of the sun. No other place anywhere in the world
would experience such a dramatic dawning of each new day. The
place where time ends and time begins.
Settlement and occupation by Maori to this country and region came some 1000 years ago as part of the great migration from the Polynesian homeland of Hawaiki. Pilgrim fleet leaders Paoa and Kiwa of the Horouta canoe made the Gisborne and East Coast area the seat of New Zealand history.
The Maori people of the region continue their allegiances to strong tribal social networks with Ngati Porou to the north and Rongowhakaata, Aitanga a Mahaki and Ngai Tamanuhiri to the south. As a collective, the Maori version of the region suggests, it is the place where the sun shines
