In New Zealand Mother's Day is
celebrated on the second Sunday in May, which means that, in 2010,
it is on 9th May. Although most countries recognize the second Sunday in May as the
official Mothers Day, in England Mothers Day is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent.
Although there has been some form of Mothers Day in most countries
throughout history, our modern Mother's Day originated in 1872 when
Julia Ward Howe organised a special day for mothers in America.
In New Zealand Mother's Day is normally celebrated with gifts or
flowers, and by the family spending the day, or at least part of the day
with their mother. Traditionally the Mother is treated to breakfast in
bed and is either taken out to a restaurant or has her meals cooked for
her as a part of a family dinner
Much thought normally goes into choosing an appropriate
Mothers day present. The present needs to be
personal and a luxury type of gift as opposed to a practical one. Gift
Baskets or flowers are ideal gifts for this occasion.
