In New Zealand Valentine's Day will fall on the 14th of February in
2008.
Valentines Day is believed to have started in ancient Rome when February
14th was a feast day in honour of Juno, the patroness of marriage and
women. Many people who selected a valentine on this day eventually
married them and so when Emperor Claudius II was having trouble raising
an army because married men didn't want to leave their wives, he banned
the celebration and also marriage. An Italian priest, Valentine,
was against this ban and secretly married couples. Valentine was
arrested and put to death on February 14 270AD. Part of the Valentine
legend is that he left a note to a jailors daughter who he had become
friends with and signed it "from your Valentine"
In modern times the Americans embraced Valentines Day and it is they who
started the custom of giving flowers to your Valentine.
In NZ Valentines Day is a day on which both sexes gift cards and a
