MT. DIFFICULTY
Chardonnay White Wine - 2003
The Mt. Difficulty vineyards are nestled along the
banks of the Kawerau River in Bannockburn, Central Otago. This perspective provides
sheltered heat over summer and ensures a long ripening through to late
April.
Traditional winemaking techniques such as full solids barrel
fermentation and weekly stirring were utilized to craft this complex
Chardonnay. Stone fruit characters compete with grapefruit, whilst the
palate is defined by its minerality.

MATAKANA ESTATE
New Zealand Syrah Wine - 2002
This noble variety of the northern Rhone is
bestowed with the ability to produce wines of great concentration, depth
and character. As a late ripener, this variety flourishes in the warm
northern conditions and temperate maritime climate of Matakana. We aim
to make a wine that embodies the elegance of the Rhone-style Syrah and
captures the distinctive personality of the Matakana terroir.
We begin with extensive care by hand for the vines. The 'grape-must'is
allowed to rest on its skins to extract the maximum flavour and colour
from the fruit. The wine is then matured in predominantly new French oak
barriques for an extended period of fifteen months, adding a distinctive
yet integrated oak character.Racking by hand also helps the wine to
develop in flavour.
This audacious wine, with its deep purple hue, leads with a heady aroma
of rich dark plums, wild blackberry and black olive, then captivates
with nints of smoky oak and cracked black pepper. Intense dark fruit
flavours, exotic spices and gamecharacters are cloaked seductively in
soft tannins and smoky oak A long, soft finish with a gracious fruit
lift completes the experience.
Syrah's distinctly individual character makes it an intriguing match for
full-flavoured fare such as rabbit slowly braised with rosemary, garlic,
olives and tomatoes, served with a roulade of roasted peppers or
pan-seared alpine venison with a medley of exotic forest mushrooms and a
wild berry glaze.
Cellar potential: 4-6 years.
MATAKANA ESTATE
New Zealand Chardonnay White Wine - 2002
The Matakana region's warm northern conditions and
temperate maritime climate allow us to harvest very ripe fruit with high
brix levels and intense fruit flavours. These are the conditions
required to develop a full-bodied, fruit-driven, complex Chardonnay.
We begin with extensive care by hand for the vines. To maximise the
fruit flavours, the grapes are handled gently, whole-bunch pressed and
then slowly barrique-fermented in a cooled environment. Thirty percent
of the wine undergoes a malolactic fermentation to add further
complexity. The wine is barrel-matured on yeast lees for 11 months,
predominantly in new French oak barriques.
This is an elegant wine with a graceful, golden hue. It beckons with a
full aroma of ripe golden peach and rock melon and charms with subtle
hints of caramel and toasty oak. Luscious ripe flavours of sweet fig,
grapefruit and melon follow on a silky smooth palate blessed with an
indulgent buttery creaminess. Distinctive and well integrated oak adds a
toasty complexity, and a long, seamless finish completes the experience.
This refined and complex wine is particularly memorable with indulgent
dishes such as avocado and pistachio-crusted snapper with a rich lemon
beurre blanc - or handmade tortellini filled with prosciutto,
mozzarella, parmesan and chicken in a creamy sauce.
Cellar potential: 2-3 years.
MATAKANA ESTATE
New Zealand Pinot Gris Wine - 2004
Pinot Gris has long been revered in the French region of Alsace, and for very good reason - the noble grape
produces wines of elegance and finesse. Today, the Matakana region is showing the potential to make Pinot Gris
that ranks alongside New Zealand's very finest.
We begin with extensive care by hand for the vines. To maintain the fine fruit flavours, the grapes are handled
gently, whole-bunch pressed and then given a slow fermentation in a cooled environment. Twenty percent
of the wine is fermented and matured in predominantly French oak barriques to add further layers of character.
This graceful wine has a light lemon hue. The bouquet offers delicate, sensuous aromas of sun-ripened pears,
soft peach, subtle quince and a whisper of cloves. Rich and luscious flavours of ripe melon, succulent apple
and lychee are wrapped seductively in a soft, creamy texture. The full, stylish palate surrenders to a long,
smooth finish. The grace and finesse of the Pinot Gris make it a fine partner for delicacies such as
Golden Bay scallops wrapped in prosciutto, lightly sautéed and served on a bed of lime-scented couscous,
rocket and watercress - or a salmon and crayfish terrine with a lemon and basil chutney.
Cellar potential: 2-3 years.
MATAKANA ESTATE
Cabernet Franc Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec Merlot Wine - 2000
The Matakana region enjoys hot northern temperatures and a dry maritime climate. It allows us to harvest very
ripe fruit with high brix levels - a prerequisite for complex, full-bodied fruit-driven reds. Over the years, some
of the region's 'Bordeaux style' reds have been ranked amongst New Zealand's finest.
We begin with extensive care by hand for the vines. The 'grape-must' is allowed to rest on its skins to
extract the maximum flavour and colour from the fruit. The wine is then matured in predominantly new
French oak barriques for an extended period of fifteen months, adding a distinctive yet integrated oak
character. Racking by hand also helps the wine to develop in flavour.
This deep red wine is heady with aromas of ripe blackberries, blackcurrants, Black Doris plums and
dark chocolate. Hints of smoky oak and subtle characters of cigar box and leather add a touch of mystery.
Intense flavours of plump summer berries are layered with fine fruit tannins and subtle oak character.
The complex yet seductively smooth palate leads on to a long, soft finish.
This wine welcomes a substantial partner in the food department, such as blackcurrant-infused eye fillet
of beef, with cherry and black pepper jus on a brunoise of roasted vegetables - or rack of lamb encased in
a pine nut and rosemary crust, roastedmedium-rare and served with wild forest mushrooms and a
blackberry sauce.Cellar potential: 4-6 years.
